چکیده
We study the effect of a massive central singularity on the structure of a triaxial galaxy using N -body simulations. Starting from a single initial model, we grow black holes with various final masses Mh and at various rates, ranging from impulsive to adiabatic. In all cases, the galaxy achieves a final shape that is nearly spherical at the center and close to axisymmetric throughout. However, the rate of change of the galaxy’s shape depends strongly on the ratio Mh/Mg of black hole mass to galaxy mass. When Mh/Mg < ∼ 0.3%, the galaxy evolves in shape on a timescale that exceeds 10 orbital periods, or roughly a galaxy lifetime. When Mh/Mg > ∼ 2.5%, the galaxy becomes axisymmetric in little more than a crossing time. We propose that the rapid evolution toward axisymmetric shapes that occurs when Mh/Mg > ∼ 2.5% provides a negative feedback mechanism which limits the mass of central black holes by cutting off their supply of fuel.

We present an analysis of the orbital properties in 9 intermediate-redshifts cluster of the CNOC1 survey and we compare them to a control sample of 12 nearby clusters. Similar to the nearby elliptical galaxies, the bulge-dominated galaxies in clusters at redshifts ∼ 0.1 − 0.4 present orbits that are more eccentric than those for disk-dominated galaxies. However, the orbital segregation is less ...
متن کامل2 v 1 1 6 N ov 1 99 8 Mergers and Galaxy Assembly
Theoretical considerations and observational data support the idea that mergers were more frequent in the past. At redshifts z = 2 to 5, violent interactions and mergers may be implicated by observations of Lyman-break galaxies, sub-mm starbursts, and active galactic nuclei. Most stars in cluster ellipticals probably formed at such redshifts, as did most of the halo and globular clusters of the...

In these lectures I present a highly opinionated review of the observed patterns of metallicity and element abundance ratios in nearby spiral, irregular, and dwarf elliptical galaxies, with connection to a number of astrophysical issues associated with chemical evolution. I also discuss some of the observational and theoretical issues associated with measuring abundances in H II regions and gas...

The GRAPE-4, the world's fastest computer in 1995-1997, has produced some major scientific results, through a wide diversity of large-scale simulations in astrophysics. Applications have ranged from planetary formation, through the evolution of star clusters and galactic nuclei, to the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
